The exterior is smooth sage leather — dusty, muted, and entirely composed — stitched tight and fitted with a top carry handle and a lower grip that make the case feel like a proper attaché rather than a game box. The brass clasp fastens with a single satisfying click; the gold hinges open to reveal the detail that stops the room: a playing field veneered entirely in rich, dark burl wood, its swirling grain in deep mahogany and amber doing the work of color, pattern, and texture simultaneously. The points are cut from a lighter, blonder burl — pale cream against the darkness — so the board reads as a work of marquetry as much as a game surface. There is no paint here, no lacquer, no printed graphic — just wood against wood, in two tones that have been talking to each other for centuries. The sage leather interior frames the whole composition with the restraint of a very good gallery wall, and the flat-disc checkers — ivory and near-black — are as unadorned and correct as the rest of it.
